Personal Profile of MARK BERNHARDT, M.D. Curriculum Vitae Mark Bernhardt M.D. A native of Lawrence, Kansas, Dr. Bernhardt joined the Clinic in January 1990, moving with his family from Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Bernhardt graduated from the University of Kansas with a B.A. in Biology in 1979. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1983. His orthopaedic surgery training at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, headquartered at St. Francis Regional Medical Center, was completed in 1988. His orthopaedic training included six months spent at the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in St. Louis, Missouri, and two months at the Accident Hospital of Lorenz Böhler in Vienna, Austria. Upon matriculation from his orthopaedic residency, Dr. Bernhardt spent a year at Beth Israel Hospital/Harvard Medical School as the Daniel E. Hogan Spine Fellow, training under the internationally recognized academic spine surgeon Augustus A. White III, M.D., Ph.D. After completing his Spine Fellowship and before joining the Dickson-Diveley Clinic, Dr. Bernhardt served as an Instructor in Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School for six months, running Dr. White's clinical practice and Spine Fellowship while Dr. White was on sabbatical leave. Since joining the Clinic in 1990 Dr. Bernhardt has primarily limited his surgical practice to spine surgery and orthopaedic trauma. A member of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine Orthopaedic Surgery faculty, Dr. Bernhardt is the Head of the Spine Teaching Panel at St. Luke's Hospital. Dr. Bernhardt is a consultant at Truman Medical Center and attends a monthly spine/scoliosis clinic at The Children's Mercy Hospital. Dr. Bernhardt was certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in July 1991. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has had the honor of serving on several Academy committees and serving as Chairman of a number of the Academy's educational courses for orthopaedic surgeons. Dr. Bernhardt is a Fellow of the Cervical Spine Research Society, a Fellow of the Scoliosis Research Society, and a member of the North American Spine Society. Dr. Bernhardt was honored in 1998 by membership in the Inter-Urban Orthopaedic Society. He is active on the medical staff of St. Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, in the Missouri State Orthopaedic Association, and in the Mid-Central States Orthopaedic Society. Dr. Bernhardt is experienced in treating adult and pediatric patients with cervical, thoracic, and lumbosacral spine problems, including spine deformities (such as scoliosis, kyphotic deformities, and spondylolisthesis), spinal trauma, spinal instabilities, herniated discs, degenerative and developmental conditions (such as spinal stenosis), spinal infections and tumors. Dr. Bernhardt serves as a reviewer for Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. As of 1998 he has authored eight book chapters, six research studies, three case reports, five review articles/clinical opinions, and fourteen abstracts. The son of a college football coach, Dr. Bernhardt is a former football player and wrestler. He enjoys playing tennis and golf and caring for injured athletes.
