Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute Breaks Ground on Hospital Expansion

The region’s only dedicated orthopedic hospital expands to offer enhanced
access, comfort and convenience

To meet the community’s growing need for specialized orthopedic care, Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute—the region’s only dedicated orthopedic hospital—has broken ground on a new hospital expansion Construction officially began last month and is expected to be complete in the spring of 2018. Plans include adding more than 22,000 square feet of new hospital space, as well as renovations to approximately 32,000 square feet of existing space. In addition to all new, modern inpatient rooms (which will nearly double in number), the hospital is adding three new surgical suites and creating expanded clinic space for the three orthopedic physician practices inside Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute.

“The expansion project demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing high-quality orthopedic care for all who need it,” said Charles Rhoades, M.D., CEO of Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute. “Adding more beds, rooms and amenities further enables us to meet growing consumer demand for specialized orthopedic care with enhanced comfort and convenience.”

Expansion plans also include a new, dedicated space for Ortho Urgent Care which opened at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute in November 2016 to provide specialized, evening, and weekend care for urgent sports injuries and other orthopedic injuries. Once construction is complete, Ortho Urgent Care will
extend its hours to include weekdays as well. “Getting the right treatment from the right provider at the right time is important for every patient,” said Dr. Rhoades. “By expanding our hospital and making our orthopedic specialists more accessible at the point of injury, we are increasing the likelihood of optimal
recovery for those affected by musculoskeletal injuries and other orthopedic conditions.” To ensure the layout of the new and renovated spaces are well organized, patient-friendly and fully functional for physicians and staff, hospital leaders contracted Pulse Design Group—a Kansas City-based architectural
firm that specializes in healthcare design—for architectural planning. They also contracted JE Dunn Construction, a leading provider of construction management services, design-build and integrated project delivery based in Kansas City. U.S. Bank is the construction lender for the expansion project.

“Our selection process for contractors was extensive and nationwide, but we are thrilled the firms we deemed most qualified are located in Kansas City,” said Dr. Rhoades. “We like to support local businesses and work with others in our community whenever possible.” Because this development will enable Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute to serve more patients, the hospital also expects to employ another 35-50 employees across all positions when the new and renovated spaces are complete. Hospital leaders say they are committed to having more nurses per patient in every phase of care—one of many patient benefits that sets the hospital apart from most others. Construction is currently underway on the
south side of the building and will not affect the main entrance to the hospital. The hospital anticipates continuing to operate at its current capacity throughout the expansion. Hospital leaders are also committed to minimizing any disruption caused by the construction. “Construction almost always comes with some minor inconveniences, but Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute has invested a great deal of time and resources to ensure the transition goes smoothly for patients as well as our team,” said Dr. Rhoades.
