Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute Recognized Nationally for Leading Quality Healthcare

Patients rank KC’s only dedicated orthopedic hospital for excellence in patient care experience

HealthStream Award WinnerLeawood, Kan. – Oct. 26, 2016 — For the second consecutive year, Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute has received an Excellence through Insight® award for Overall Inpatient Experience from HealthStream, a national healthcare research solutions company. HealthStream awards recognize healthcare organizations that excel in their ability to gain insight into their patients, employees, physicians and consumers through research, and use that information to build excellence within their organization.

“Providing exemplary patient care experiences is a high priority at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute, and it is a process we continually monitor to improve,” says Charles E. Rhoades, M.D., CEO. “We are proud to be recognized by HealthStream for our commitment to excellence two years in a row, and even more gratified to know that it shows in our patients’ feedback about care and outcomes.”

Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute earned the Excellence through Insight award for exceptional performance in the small hospital category. All hospitals that were HealthStream clients in 2015 were considered for the award, but only those scoring in the 75th percentile or better earned national recognition. Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute was chosen for exceeding industry standards, receiving the highest ratings among HealthStream’s small hospital clients.

HealthStream CEO Robert A. Frist, Jr. said, “We applaud Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute’s high-level commitment to excellence in healthcare and are pleased to recognize their achievement through the Excellence through Insight award.” The award will be presented at the HealthStream annual summit in Nashville, Tenn., on Oct. 27.

Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute to Open Ortho Urgent Care on November 28

The region’s only dedicated orthopedic hospital expands to serve community need for accessible urgent orthopedic care.

Ortho Urgent Care at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute

Leawood, Kan. – Oct. 10, 2016 – Recognizing the growing need for access to prompt, specialized care, Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute—the region’s only dedicated orthopedic hospital—will open an Ortho Urgent Care center next month. Ortho Urgent Care brings together orthopedic expertise and convenient after-hours access, including evenings and weekends, for all types of orthopedic injuries.

“Musculoskeletal injuries are the leading cause of all injury-related healthcare visits in the U.S.,” said Joseph Waeckerle, M.D., FACEP, Medical Director. “Offering urgent access at night and on the weekends when orthopedic injuries are likely to happen is not only convenient for patients, but also more cost-effective than visiting the emergency room.”

Scheduled to open on November 28, Ortho Urgent Care at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute brings patients convenient access to comprehensive orthopedic care services. Because the urgent care center is located inside the region’s only dedicated orthopedic hospital, patients will benefit from the expertise of more than 25 board-certified orthopedic physicians, as well as physician assistants and nurses who specialize in orthopedics and sports medicine.

In addition to diagnostic imaging, bracing, splinting, casting, and other treatment services, staff will assist with scheduling of MRIs and rehabilitation therapy if needed. These services are also available onsite at the hospital.

Walk-in service will be available for patients age 12 and older with sports injuries and everyday orthopedic injuries caused by falls and other accidents. Fractures, sprains/strains, torn ligaments, muscle contusions (bruises) and minor lacerations are expected to be among the most common injuries treated at Ortho Urgent Care. (For life or limb threatening injures, patients should call 911 or go the emergency room.)

“Rapid treatment is important for proper recovery from orthopedic injuries—and so is specialized care,” explained Charles Rhoades, M.D., CEO of Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute. “We are here to provide both for our local community, and expanding our services to include Ortho Urgent Care is a natural progression of our commitment.”
